Understanding Social Identity Theory and How it Impacts Your Health and Beauty

Our social identity can affect many aspects of our lives, usually this is without us even realising! The groups we feel we belong to and the labels we use to describe ourselves can very much influence the way we think, but also the way we feel and behave in certain situations. Social identity theory examines the ways in which our sense of self is shaped and changed by those groups we feel like we belong to, whether that be age, gender or even social class, sometimes this is a positive but can also have very negative impacts on our lives.

So, what is the relationship between social identity theory and health and beauty? The answer is in the way we define ourselves and also see ourselves in comparison to others, for example, if you are over the age of 40 you may perceive yourself differently than someone say, in their 20s or even 30s! This can have an impact on how you approach your health and beauty routines, as society may influence you into believing that there are only specific things you can do in your age group.

One thing we all need to remember is that social identity isn't fixed! The power is in our own hands to redefine our identities in a positive way. Us as a society can embrace a more inclusive meaning of what it means to be beautiful or healthy by challenging the stereotypes and expectations on our social groups that limit us or hold us back. This is where glow comes in, to empower us all regardless of social identity.

Incorporating social identity theory into your health and beauty routines can help you to feel more confident and empowered, we want to use glow to be able to connect and read about others overcoming the same obstacles. Becoming aware of social identity we can realise how it affects our lives and take back its power to become the best version of ourselves.
